The design is a combination of high-strength boron steel and aluminum body elements. As for the drive, the manufacturer offers front-wheel drive (FWD) in the Volvo XC40 T5 and T4 models, and all-wheel drive (AWD) in the B5 and T5 Recharge models.

The suspension consists of classic McPherson columns at the front and a multi-link suspension at the rear, where, in addition, a transverse fiberglass leaf spring was used, which replaced the coil springs. This solution reduces weight and provides better load distribution. The driver has a choice of Comfort, Dynamic and Eco driving modes, and in the Recharge version there is also an additional Off-Road mode.

In the version for the 2023 model year, the car has undergone a facelift. From the outside, there was a slimmer, frameless grill in the Recharge version and with vertical slats in the B5, adaptive LED headlights with automatic segment extinction, new bumpers and new LED taillights.

In the interior, the infotainment system has been changed to Android Automotive with Google services, the wireless charger tray has been enlarged and the steering wheel has been redesigned, and new buttons have been added in the Recharge version. Driver assistance packages have also been improved, radars with a range of up to 250 m, 360 cameras and the Pilot Assist system operating at speeds up to 130 km/h have appeared.

• Electric - drive on both axles, two engines - one for each axle, total power 402 hp (2 x 201 hp), range up to 364 km (EPA), mounted in the Recharge Twin Motor version in 2020-2024, and from 2024 on the EX40.
